Today, it’s my turn on the blog tour for Rob Sinclair’s thriller, Sleeper 13.
And, even better, this is my first blog tour too! So, what’s Sleeper 13 all about? This is what the blurb says:
Smuggled to the Middle East as a child.
Trained as one of the most elite insurgents of his generation.
Forced to do things no one should, for a cause he couldn’t believe in.
But as his brothers were preparing to kill, he was looking for a way out.
Now, on the eve of the deadliest coordinated attacks the world has ever seen, he finally has his chance.
He will break free and hunt down those who made him a monster.
He must draw on all his training to survive.
He is SLEEPER 13.
I’ll be honest, this isn’t the book for me. I’m not a massive fan of this sort of thriller; for me, it’s too much going on and not enough character development for me. But I think reading out of your comfort zone is a good thing, makes you a more rounded reader. It took me a while to get into this book, I just didn’t connect with Aydin as a character. I was more interested in reading about Rachel Cox who I found more relatable, intriguing and I wanted to know more about her. For me, she was the only fully fleshed out character that made me keep reading this book. I did however really enjoy reading the flashbacks of Aiydn’s childhood. Disturbing but a really interesting read.
In terms of plot, it’s a good plot that’s mostly well-paced and through the book, we travel all over the globe. I’m sure that fans of this genre will be in their element, excited, gripped word after word. For me, there was a few scenes that really grabbed my attention but I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more on the screen.
Overall, this book wasn’t my favourite book I’ve ever read but I really loved reading Rachel Cox, some great paced set pieces that makes a gripping read and the flashbacks of Aidan’s past. I found the ‘Farm’ scenes the strongest writing in the book that really made me go ‘Oh! What?!’ and it did make me connect with the character of Aiydn but overall, I needed a bit more. But I think that’s why the second book in the series (Fugitive 13) will develop this further.
A big thank you to Poppy and Orion for the copy and for letting me take place on the blog book tour! There’s still a few dates below, so go and check them out:
