It’s an exciting post on the blog today as it’s a book review about a book that I really enjoyed recently – it’s Those People by Louise Candlish, the author of the bestseller Our House…
Last year, Our House was one of my favourite reads and introduced me to Louise Candlish’s writing. Straight away, I was hooked and loved every minute of it and it became a bestseller and got everyone talking while winning a few awards, too… but now Louise is back with her next novel, Those People. What’s it about? Here’s the blurb:
Until Darren and Jodie move in, Lowland Way is a suburban paradise. Beautiful homes. Friendly neighbours. Kids playing out in the street. But Darren and Jodie don’t follow the rules and soondisputes over loud music and parking rights escalate to threats of violence.
Then, early one Saturday, a horrific crime shocks the street. As the police go house to house, the residents close ranks and everyone’s story is the same: they did it.
BUT THERE’S A PROBLEM.
THE POLICE DON’T AGREE.
AND THE DOOR THEY’RE KNOCKING ON NEXT IS YOURS.
After enjoying Our House so much, I couldn’t wait to read Those People. As soon as I saw Louise’s tweet about the cover reveal, I was hooked and pre-ordered my copy straight away. Our House was about property porn and bringing in the domestic and the community to the foreground which made it seem a bit more real and a bit more as if this could happen to you the next day and she’s doing the same with this new novel, too.
I love Louise’s writing. I think she’s clever, original and she creates some brilliant characters. For me, I prefer Those People to Our House, I found it got more under my skin, I got more invested in the characters and I could just imagine it so much.
The strongest point for me of the novel is the characters. At first I thought there was too much characters in one novel but over time, you get used to them and their voices are so individual and different that you get used to them pretty quickly. I loved how at the start of each chapter, we hear their statements that they gave to the police that adds up piece by piece to what actually happened… Candlish has created a great ensemble of characters that you love to hate.
Overall, there is so much to love and take away from this book. I loved the ensemble of characters – they felt believable and they are really characters you love to hate. The plot is gripping and a complete page-turner perfect for taking on holiday or staying up all night. I would love to see this is a television series and Rory Kinnear to play Ralph – he’s perfect for the role. If you loved Our House, then you will love this. I can’t wait to see what Louise writes next…
